Just in time for their hotly anticipated North American summer tour alongside rockers Heart, Brit pop-metal kings Def Leppard are set to release their first-ever live album, Mirrorball, along with a tantalizing DVD containing rare onstage and backstage footage.

The catch: it will be exclusively available at Walmart and Sam’s Club in North America starting June 7. Oh yes, and for the kiddies, Mirrorball will also be available online, marking the first time the band's music will officially be made available for digital purchase.

Even so, I’m not exactly sure how to interpret this news.

While fans like me are thrilled at the prospect of hearing Lep classics such as "Animal," "Pour Some Sugar On Me," "Photograph" and "Rock Of Ages" live as recorded on The Sparkle Lounge Tour - not to mention the three new songs completing the Mirrorball set - the whole Walmart thing kind of smacks of submission to the mainstream.

It certainly undercuts any illusion of rock and roll debauchery. Really, it’s hard to be non-conformist in a Walmart store, and isn’t that what Leppard fans - all music fans - fancy themselves to be?

Maybe I’m living in a dream world… or maybe I'm just having an exceptionally long bad-hair year. Anyhoo, here’s what Leppard singer Joe Elliott told Billboard about the new songs, including the new single, “Undefeated,” contained below:

"When we decided to do (the live album), it just got said — I don't know by who — 'Why don't we chuck a couple of new songs on the end?' And that two became three, and in fairness it could've been four if we'd just had a little bit more time. But we wanted to tour this summer, so any fourth or fifth song we had brewing, we'll save them for the next record."

Def Leppard and Heart play Toronto’s Molson Amphitheatre August 16.

Note that a special limited vinyl edition of Mirrorball will also be made available. And, as Blabbermouth notes, Def Leppard will also be releasing their new community based website in May, billed as the ultimate fan experience and go-to destination for all things Leppard.
