Considering that Holly’s output ceased with his death at age 22, the material on Rave On Buddy Holly, released June 28 via Fantasy Records /Concord Music Group, reinforces just how talented the "Peggy Sue" and "That'll Be the Day" songwriter and guitarist was while powerfully suggesting what might have been had he not gone down in a plane crash in 1959.

According to a press release sent out yesterday (April 28), the cover versions aren't the typical note-for-note renditions but instead artists "clearly felt free to explore radically new interpretations." Florence and the Machine "bring an industrial New Orleans vibe" to 'Not Fade Away' while Modest Mouse covers 'That'll Be the Day' in an "avant-garde" style.

Still, given that alt-rock nerds Weezer had a hit with a song called "Buddy Holly" - creating one of the all-time best videos to go with it - they might have seemed like an obvious choice for inclusion on Rave On; it’s not like film-music supervisor Randall Poster, who oversaw the project, was wedded to one genre of artist.

Also featured is punk poet diva Patti Smith, rocker Nick Lowe, alt-country dandies My Morning Jacket plus Fiona Apple, Florence + The Machine and Julian Casablancas in addition to the above-named. Maybe just an oversight or maybe the band declined, but weird.
