It would seem Coldplay are gearing up to release some new music although not in any hum-drum fashion. This is, after all, a new(ish) millennium and one the Brit pop/rock fabulists have pretty much ruled without effort.

An email from the press department of the band’s label, EMI Music Canada, and carrying the subject line, “Note from Will,” landed in music journalist inboxes this morning. Inside the mail is a link to a landing page on the band’s official site with this note:

Dear friends,

We're about to play a bunch of summer festivals so it's as good a time as any to put out a new song.

'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall' will be available digitally on Friday 3rd June at 12pm (BST), except in the UK where it'll come out on the stroke of midnight between Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th June.

We'll also stream it here on Friday and give it a run out at Rock Im Park.

Love Will

FYI, Rock Im Park is a big music festival happening this weekend in Nuremberg, where Coldplay is headlining Saturday night; 12 pm BST Friday June 3 would be 7 am EST. Will, of course, is Coldplay drummer Will Campion. The landing page also contains lyrics to the new song. But there is more on the Coldplay/new music tip.

Clashmusic is reporting various hints in the Twitterverse about the follow-up to 2008’s gazillion-selling Viva La Vida disc. They write, “Working in almost total secrecy, Coldplay have managed to complete work on their new studio album.

“Brian Eno has again taken the reins, with Coldplay said to experimenting with new sounds. Rumours of an electronic direction have taken hold due to comments from drummer Will Champion, however at this stage everything is up for grabs.”

Oh, isn’t the suspense just killing you? We will report back with more when we have it; meantime, make a note to grab that new single Friday, and do let us know what you think.
