Quick – someone check and see if Hell has frozen over!
In a stunning and most welcome development, American Idol judge, memoirist and menswear huckster Steven Tyler may be resuming his former role as a proper rock star and – gasp! – a real musician by participating in a new Aerosmith recording, the group’s first batch of original material since 2001’s much-loathed (by them, and rightly so) Just Push Play.
OK, so we’re laying it on a bit thick but only because we miss Aerosmith music which, when you think about it, is why Tyler has the mainstream fame he has today. Throw us a bone already: the above-mentioned Just Push Play – which guitarist Joe Perry has consistently slagged five ways to Sunday – and 2004’s covers set Honkin’ On Bobo, just didn’t cut it.
Tyler solo discs are swell and all, but it ain’t Aerosmith.
The good news? The band is apparently set to work again with producer/engineer Jack Douglas, a.k.a. "the sixth member" of Aerosmith who helmed such dandies as 1974's Get Your Wings to 1975's Toys in the Attic, 1976's Rocks and 1977's Draw the Line (as well as Honkin' on Bobo and several Joe Perry solo albums).
According to the U.K.’s Metal Hammer, Douglas confirms the band has been working on new material both in Perry’s own studio and their famed Pandora’s Box studio, with a May 2012 release tentatively scheduled.
“I know that’s a long wait,” Douglas says of what will be the group’s 14th studio record, “but after the South American tour and Japan in October, November and December, we will get back to work on it in mid-January. For those who are asking, this album will be raw, nasty, tough rock with a good deal of the old Aerosmith ‘tongue in cheek.’”
Alright already, sign us up. Lest you doubt how awesome Aerosmith can be when they really put their heart and soul into it, witness the clips below. American Idol my butt.
Rock on Bros. We are all waiting impati!!!ently for ya all.
