Simon Cowell has confirmed that Whitney Houston was being considered for a spot as a mentor on X Factor.

The Hollywood Reporter reported on Friday the star was in the running for a seat on the panel after the Fox talent show fired host Steve Jones and judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger in a surprise shake up last month. Houston died on Saturday (February 11) in the bathtub in her room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Yesterday (Sunday, February 12) Cowell told Piers Morgan in a phone interview that the show's producers were indeed discussing bringing her on board.

He said, according to THR, "We were ironically going to meet on Monday and of course, one of the names we were going to be talking about in that meeting as a possible mentor on the new series of X Factor was going to be Whitney Houston.

"Given the choice, I would have liked to have taken her under my wing as well, because she would have been the ultimate, ultimate mentor to any contestant coming on the show."

He said of Houston's death, "I am absolutely devastated by this news. I'm so sad for her. She was undoubtedly one of the greatest superstars of all time, one of the greatest voices in our lifetime we're likely ever to hear. To hear this news, it's really, really upset me."

I located a segment of the interview, but not the part where he talks about hiring Whitney. Hear Simon talk about Whitney's passing and her amazing talent below.

Bring Paula back

problem with X factor

#1 problem how is it all these groups tryed out and who makes the final 12 --- 2 groups x factor makes up

#2 how is it that 1 person doesn't make the final 12 then comes back to win

as if that wasn't scripted

simon you would have made a good choice by bringing miss houston aboard on the x factor. sorry she would be great addition to the show, sadly miss by a great fan. rest in peace we love you bye.

That would have been a very wreckless choice by Simon. Paula is crazy/unpredictable enough but a drug addict would have been very unreliable to say the least

I was shocked at Simon's lack of judgement in hiring Paula, knowing what a complete flake she can be. He made a big mistake in firing the woman who was from the original British version of his show (I want to say Cheryl Cole?) Instead he hires a complete bimbo from The Pussycat Dolls and a Dodo Bird. Simon, why didn't you just hire Bikini Girl and be done with it?
