A new trailer for the Les Miserablesmovie, based on the hit stage musical, has debuted and it looks appropriately miserable.
Anne Hathaway, who plays the ill-fated prostitute Fantine sings "I Dreamed a Dream" in the clip, which shows her getting her hair cut off (which she does to buy a woolen skirt for her daughter Cosette, though, really, the evil Thenardiers have lied about Cosette getting a skirt and are really just extorting money from Fantine even though she has none....she really does have a ridiculously hard time. It's not called "The Miserables" for nothing. [Also, I don't mean to be persnickety but has anyone else noticed that Anne Hathaway's hair here is brown? Because Victor Hugo clearly wrote that Fantine had "thick blonde tresses" and I think they should have stuck to that. Though I do love me some Anne Hathaway...they couldn't dye her hair? I'm just saying.] [[ANYWAY...]])
Les Mis stars Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Amanda Seyfried, and is set to open in December, which the Los Angeles Times points out is perfect for maximum awards impact.
Les Miserables, the stage musical, opened on Broadway in 1987 and closed in 2003.
It's not the first time Anne has sung in a movie. She did a bang up job of Queen's "Somebody to Love" in Ella Enchanted.

I am really looking forward to the Rock of Ages movie. Some people seem to be sneering at the casting of Tom Cruise as glam rock star Stacee Jaxx but that reaction doesn't make sense to me. Tom Cruise is a really good actor AND it's meta casting, as he was an actual sex symbol during the era the film is referencing. So, it's funny and sharp. If you want to Tom singing some Def Leppard, head on over to Kim Hughes' rock blog and have a listen!
Meanwhile, here's another clip from the flick, of Mary J. Blige covering Journey's "Anyway You Want It." The scene is set in a strip club in the eighties. My main concern is whether they got the hair right, and I can't really tell...but I'm thinking no, because a lot of it appears to be moving. And eighties hair didn't move, no matter how long it was. At least it didn't move much.
Rock of Ages is, of course, the story of two kids with big dreams on the Sunset Strip in 1987. It stars Cruise, Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta, Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand - and I guess MJ Blige is in it too.
Is Taylor Swift going to play Joni Mitchell on the big screen? That's the rumour.
You know what? I can actually see that working really well! I almost never agree with supposed castings of musical icons that may or may not be true lately. Rihanna as Whitney Houston? Hahahahahaha*deep breath*HahahaHAHAHAHA*wipes eyes*Ha. Hee. Heh.
Bobbi Kristina supposedly wants to play her mother in a biopic, should said movie ever get made.
This is according to TMZ, which claims that, with reports that Rihanna wants to play Whitney Houston, the late singer's daughter "is telling friends there is only one person that can play that role ... HER."
Katy Perry recently announced that her 3D concert documentary Part of Me will be released in time for the July 4 holiday, so you can see it and "be a firework."
The flick will chronicle Katy's rise to fame, life as a superstar, and... probably the same other stuff every concert documentary covers...it's not Don DeLillo's Underworld we're summarizing here. If you know and love Katy, you know what it's going to be about - her Christian upbringing, maybe her marriage and divorce, and if you don't know and love Katy, you probably don't care enough about her to see it unless your girlfriend or kids drag you. And if you love Katy, you'll love the movie.
As the release of the highly-anticipated movie draws nearer, the odds are in MuchMusic’s favour with news that three stars from The Hunger Games will be part of New.Music.Live on Monday, March 19. Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, and Alexander Ludwig, or as fans of the three-book series know them, Peeta, Gale and Cato, will be on hand with host Lauren Toyota for the full hour at MuchMusic headquarters. Fans can tune in to New.Music.Live.’s new air time at 6 pm ET to see two thirds of the Katniss/Gale/Peeta love triangle, as well as the head Career Tribute, as they share stories from the set and reveal what fans can expect when the first Hunger Games film hits theatres on March 23.
Trent Reznor and Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs covered Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" for David Fincher's The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo movie and now there's a video. Reznor scored the film with his partner Atticus Ross (the duo won an award for scoring The Social Network), and the soundtrack is already out.
The video features shots from the title sequence of the flick.
A little surprisingly Karen O, 33, didn't even know the song before covering it. "I plead total ignorance to Led Zeppelin," she told the SUN.
"I am totally in the dark about them...I didn't even hear the name right when I was asked. I thought they said The Pilgrim Song and I was like, 'What's that?' Yeah I know, it's pretty embarrassing."
Try not to judge.
Anyway, I gotta say, this movie better be AWESOME for all the hype it's getting. The one book I read of the series was only so so. Reading it felt sort of like eating an entire bag of Miss Vicki's chips in one sitting - you can't stop yourself even though you know it's total trash and absolutely TERRIBLE for you, but you convince yourself it's not that bad because they're disguised as sort of gourmet junk food.
I'll see the movie, of course, because it's directed by Fincher and I think he's brilliant.
You have to head over to Pitchfork.com to watch the video.
