The littlest wonder: AC/DC guitarist Angus Young in concert, courtesy Getty Images.
Diminutive AC/DC guitarist Angus Young is the first of many legendary axemen – see also Jimmy Page, Joe Perry, Les Paul, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Phil Collen, Mick Mars, Scott Ian, Dave Navarro, Tom Morello, Gary Moore and Zakk Wylde – to salute Eddie Van Halen in a forthcoming coffee table book celebrating the Dutch-born fret master.

Young not only compares Van Halen to Jimi Hendrix but also downplays his own instrumental prowess. That’s a self-deprecating Aussie for you.

It was seen as a litmus test as to whether they could pull it together and pull it off. But with news that scheduled Australian concert dates by a reformed Van Halen have been cancelled, fans are once again left to wonder if David Lee Roth, Edward Van Halen, Alex Van Halen and the kid can actually conjure the on-stage magic of old.

Oh yes, also whether the band can actually finish and release a follow-up to their last studio album, 1998’s (!) Van Halen III with former Extreme frontman Gary Cherone. Let’s just say smart folks are crossing their fingers but not holding their breath (for fear of turning blue) on that last count.

Do you worship at the altar of Eddie Van Halen? Then boy, do we have the goods for you.

Rock photographer Neil Zlozower’s coffee table book of photos of the guitar god drops this fall (October 12 to be precise), but pre-orders can be placed now via the Van Halen Store website. (Maybe while you're there you can pick up some Eddie Van Halen-approved flip flops just in time for summer. Yes, really).

With confirmed acts including Alice Cooper, Hole, Bad Religion, Panic! at the Disco, Sisters of Mercy, Dashboard Confessional, Sum 41 and Danzig - to name but a handful - the next installment of Australia’s punk ‘n’ metal Soundwave Festival is already shaping up to be a monster.

Along with fellow bruiser Keith Richards and, uh, Ashley Judd, he is tearing up the best-seller lists with his memoir, Red: My Uncensored Life In Rock. Now former Van Halen vocalist, current Chickenfoot alum and tequila baron Sammy Hagar is rivaling Steven Tyler with jaw-dropping revelations about legendary bands he was asked to join… but didn’t.

Rock fans gearing up for the summer concert season and hoping to stay cool - but look hip - as they hoist their three-finger devil salutes should proceed directly to guitar god Edward Van Halen’s online merchandise shop.

There, in addition to EVH-approved high tops and headgear, geeks and freaks can also find official Van Halen-issued flip-flops in three fetching colour combos (red and black, white and black and yellow and black) for $30 a pop. And no, we’re not making this up.

In (perhaps) more relevant news, Van Halen are working on a new album with producer John Shanks (Westlife, Miley Cyrus), their first full-length LP since 1998's Van Halen III. The disc will feature Eddie’s kid Wolfgang Van Halen on bass and the return of vocalist David Lee Roth.

Sammy Hagar Happy Alien Abduction Day!

I'm not entirely sure how we are supposed to go about marking this day and I'm not going to make a joke about the obvious, because I am a grown up.

But we do have an actual alien abduction story, courtesy of MTVHive. It seems Sammy Hagar of Van Hagar fame was once taken by Extra Terrestrials, a story he alludes to in his new autobiography Red: My Uncensored Life.

When asked if he has ever been abducted by aliens, Sammy says, "I think I have…
Remember the story in the book, where I have a dream about being contacted by aliens in the foothills above Fontana?"

The passage, according to MTV, reads, "I saw a ship and two creatures inside of this ship… And they were connected to me, tapped into my mind through some kind of mysterious wireless connection."

Sammy says, "It was real. [Aliens] were plugged into me. It was a download situation. This was long before computers or any kind of wireless. There weren't even wireless telephones. Looking back now, it was like, 'F**k, they downloaded something into me!' Or they uploaded something from my brain, like an experiment. 'See what this guy knows.'

"That happened. That friggin' happened, I'll tell you right now. Another thing happened when I was about four that I didn't put into the book. One time I saw what I considered to be, well, at the time I thought it was a car with no wheels. We lived out in the country and I saw this thing floating across a field, creating this big dust storm. I threw rocks at it and sh**. And I don't know what happened after that."

He goes on to get all technical: "I couldn't talk about it because I didn't know how to explain it. I didn't understand the technology. But now I'm pretty sure it was a wireless situation. Either a download or upload. They were tapped into my brain and the knowledge was transferred back and forth. I could see them and everything while it was happening. There was a visual involved, almost like … I don’t know. [Laughs.] Don't get me going!"
